Hard surface flooring can be an attractive way to add drama to a space. It can also be the focal point of that space. I don't advocate more than two different surfaces per floor.(area rugs do not count)

Tile work can add drama to any space. Remember to keep the overall design concept in mind when working with tile. You don't want to overwhelm a space with the design. You want to accent the space. When working with baths the tile work can be the focal point and the main part of the concept. In a kitchen you want the tile to be an accent is most concepts.
